An All Hallows quick listen!

The town of Flarant is abandoned to its fate, year after year.

Year after year the people of Flarant lose their children to the ghosts and ghouls on All Hallows Eve. They cannot flee. They are beyond all hope.

And then a stranger enters the town in the days leading up to the event. This year, there is difference in the air. This year, the children are not alone.

Fees Nag (Feast Night in Afrikaans)

Die dorp Flarant word jaar na jaar aan sy lot oorgelaat.

Jaar na jaar verloor die mense van Flarant hul kinders aan die spoke en monsters op Allerheilige aand. Hulle kan nie vlug nie. Hulle is sonder alle hoop.

En dan kom 'n vreemdeling die dorp binne in die dae wat lei tot die gebeurtenis.

Vanjaar is daar 'n verskil in die atmosfeer.

Vanjaar is die kinders nie alleen nie.

Chapter 1: Feast Night

A short excerpt (a short story, after all!).

HALLOWEEN. All Hallows Eve.

Some call it a pagan festival. Others know it as an evil feast. Time and technology have not yet forced it into the recesses of memory and myth. Some see it as a carnival of fun. Others regard it as the worst manipulation humankind has confronted and continues to face. Relegate it to the past, bury it in layers of legend and let us be done, they say … and are ignored.

This is the greatest night of all dark nights for the dead.

On this one night the lifeless are awake and aware after waiting in impatience and agitation too many forgotten nights, again to stalk the innocent and unwary, a nocturnal forage of feasting on souls after spilling fresh, warm blood.

They will not surrender to memory and myth.

Dark, starlit, and moonless are the heavens, the wind ghostly in towering leafless and gnarled trees. It is cold and fog swirls as apparitions. In mist-ridden shadows death appears once more.

Tree limbs are like old women's spectral fingers reaching out to anyone who happens to pass, anyone creeping along the path of blood and gore on this night, hoping to remain unnoticed, unseen. There is no hope.

Children out trick-a-treating are snatched by black-cloaked figures and what is left to remind their parents of terrible tragedy are fear-ridden, hollow screams, and wicked cackles from the shadows.

Children are sacrificed as living victims to the gods, gods who enjoy the spilling of guts over paths while fire dances its erratic rhythm around sacrificial altars. Gods with names from ancient, mythical times. Their names should be scrapped from every record, and yet even a whisper of a name keeps them alive.

Busy few days

So, in the last week or so since my last post I have listened to most of Dreamer Stones (still a few chapters to go) and also Echolone Mine, which is now approved, and I must say, it's excellent. Seriously awesome! Can't wait for it to go live to share links and excerpts!

Also, the Italian translation for Feast Night has been approved and published. Will post links when they are available.

Update and apology

Hello, everyone! Let me start with saying I'm sorry it has been quiet here. I have missed posting with regularity, but there have been good reasons :) Those reasons form part of the update as stated in the title. Firstly, four new translations, two of which are now complete and published (still waiting on Amazon, though), two of which are in final stages.

(published)

(in progress)

While that was going on, I prepared my short story - G A B R I E L - from the Christmas anthology published in 2018 as a standalone, including a bonus chapter and epilogue. This has now been uploaded, and I'll post the blurb and link once it's live.

Besides other duties I simply couldn't ignore, AVAELYN; The Enshrouded World has seen some action. My intention was to have a first draft ready by year end and I put my shoulder to the wheel, so to speak. At 100k words, though, it's not near finished! Hopefully the Christmas break will offer more time to add to the story before editing can commence. Seriously, my characters are misbehaving, and I'm already thinking that the WIP cover I have will need to change to reflect that.

All in all, something had to give to keep up with so many tasks, and that meant social media and blog posts. Hopefully normal routines will resume shortly … then again, um, Christmas …

Speaking of Christmas, I do have some intriguing reads available!

Chat again soon :)

African Moon and Feast Night updated

Tomorrow she will go on with her life …

It’s a hot day in Cape Town but a woman holds the vigil at a window overlooking the beach. She has repeatedly dreamed of a sailing boat, a lost soul perhaps, entering upon silver streaks on the water. Is this merely dreaming or, as she believes, a vision?

She will watch, she will give it this one day and night, and then go on with her life, and waiting with her is Barney, her beloved dog, and Fantasy, her snooty cat. Man, a girl and her fur babies get hungry while waiting for something to happen, and yet her instincts keep her there … watching … waiting …
